There’s very little that gets us more excited than a royal wedding.  It’s the romance, the pageantry, and the crème de la crème of society all coming together to celebrate the union of a prince and a princess. What’s not to love?

But before the big day, there’s the engagement — and the all-important proposal.  Here in the UK, our royal family are fashion icons as well as world leaders, they’ve been responsible for setting quite a few trends over the years from hairstyles to baby names.  Perhaps most importantly, their engagement rings are some of the most beautiful and well-designed pieces of jewellery in the world.  So much so, that rings past and present have inspired the rest of our engagement rings in a big way.

In this post, I’ll be taking you through three of the biggest engagement rings inspired by the royals.

Stunning Sapphires – Worn by Princess Diana, Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge)

Rather than a diamond, a particularly large and lustrous Ceylon sapphire is the central stone in a ring that was made by the Crown Jeweller and selected by Lady Diana Spencer for her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981.  Named after their country of origin, Sri Lanka, Ceylon sapphires are a rich royal blue which makes them perfect for a princess.  After her tragic death, Diana’s son, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with the same ring.

Sapphires are the perfect choice for brides-to-be who like a more elegantly modern and unique look than a traditional diamond.

Feminine Florals – Worn by Princess Margaret, Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York), Princess Eugenie

Pink rings inspired by flowers are another key engagement ring trend inspired by the royals.  Princess Margaret’s ring, mimicking a beautiful rosebud, features a ruby surrounded by diamond ‘petals’.  Sarah Ferguson’s gift from Prince Andrew was another ruby, from Burma, with a similar floral design, while her daughter Princess Eugenie opted an even more feminine padparascha sapphire that has more rounded petals than her mother’s.

These rings are sure to be favoured by girly, romantic brides-to-be who love receiving sentimental jewellery gifts.

Dazzling Diamond Bands – Worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Beatrice, Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex)

Nothing will make you feel like royalty than some extra sparkle in your engagement ring.  The Queen herself was the recipient of a solitaire setting that had a cluster of diamond side stones flanking the central gem.  Following suit, Princess Beatrice, sister of Eugenie, chose a ring with a channel set band of diamonds.  Even Meghan Markle, who originally received a trilogy ring with a plain gold band, upgraded hers to a pavé band shortly after her marriage to Prince Harry.

Extroverted brides-to-be who prefer something more lavish and love some extra sparkle are sure to prefer this style of ring.
